How safe is Santa Fe?

My family recently visited Santa Fe. We've heard wonderful things about the area for years and wanted to see for ourselves. We're also planning to relocate, with Santa Fe on top of our list of possible communities to call home.
One our of concerns, as environmentalists and socially concerned citizens, has been the potential ramifications of living near Los Alamos.
During our visit, we asked several people about the issues, and never really got any clear picture of the situation.
Fortunately, we stumbled upon CCNS, met the president, picked up numerous info sheets. and once back home, started reading about WIPP.
After a week in Santa Fe, we were sold on the city and its people, to the extent of signing a contract with a real estate agent to start house hunting for us. However, after reading about WIPP and the potentially devastating effects of the project, most notably, from the transportation of nuclear waste through Santa Fe County, we are seriously reconsidering the move.
On the one hand, we could see coming to Santa Fe and getting very involved with CCNS' efforts and in the fight to stop WIPP, but with an 11 month old baby, health matters are paramount, not to mention the potential loss of any real estate investment in Santa Fe.

Even if WIPP is halted indefinitely, nuclear waste is still being transported through Santa Fe County, according to CCNS' info. which is of concern.

We find it hard to believe the whole WIPP project hasn't received more national and international media attention.

Some questions:

What routes are currently used for the waste already travelling to and from Los Alamos? What is the content of those shipments? How many, 2-3 per day?
Are these the same routes as would be used for WIPP waste transport?
What are the chances of stopping WIPP indefinitely?
What are the actual and potential health risks associated with living in the Santa Fe region, under the current conditions? How do these risks increase if WIPP opens?

Any info/advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Donna Roberts. Montreal.
