John,
I would be interested to know what your background is; whether you have any bias toward this site. I used to live next
to Rocky Flats. I missed getting the Rocky Flats advisory notice in my Mortgage file that
stated, "your ground is contaminated with plutonium; but it is within the radiological protection
guidelines of the USEPA. The head of the Colorado State Health Department at
that time told me plutonium was not toxic. I learned that there was plutonium in
my drinking water and in the Lake where my water came from. I researched extensively and
learned that the DOE was going to incinerate low level rad waste in my backyard with an
experimental incinerator...........Needless to say, it did not happen. You say Rocky Flats
waste has been treated? What do you know?
You are correct that I was referring to the Part B permit for Mixed Waste. Rocky Flats has
operated without a Part B permit! They were in interim status...........and so is the WIPP site..
Grandfathered. There have been so many mishaps and mistakes regarding waste management
at Rocky Flats, that I will certainly question this issue and the future of the WIPP site.
I do environmental research for the Sierra Club in Colorado. I must say, if you can point out
appropriate land technology that has not failed as a respository for waste........I would appreciate it.
There isn't a site that hasn't leaked.........and the DOE track record for waste management
is dismal. Why should I believe them now. THEY ARE ALWAYS IN EXPERIMENTAL MODE.
