You are quite right, there are no better ideas.
No site can beat WIPP for its long term effectiveness at isolating the waste (and ANY site is vulnerable to intrusion by a driller).
No better truck design has been forthcoming. the only drawback with the TRU Pack trucks is that they look odd, and people are not comfortable with that. If they were packaged in simple gray truck trailers (like are used for transporting Nuclear Weapons -- now there's a whole other problem!) then no one would know or care.
We are fortunate in the U.S. to have good radioactive waste disposal sites like WIPP and the Nevada Test Site. If we lived in Belgium, or Taiwan, or the Phillippines, we'd have a real problem on our hands. For us in the US, this is a non-problem. Our real problem is that our hawkish government can't give up its precious nuclear weapons, which present a real threat. That's another issue altogether, and one in which the general public is not encouraged to participate, unfortunately. Waste is not the issue.
