Ease up and think for a bit. DOE cannot leave the stuff where it was made, or even at Los alamos, for example, since it is not environmentally responsible (or even legal) to do so. The waste being stored in anticipation of going to WIPP is not currently contaminating anything (Los Alamos does not glow in the dark, and is a cleaner place to live than Santa Fe), and the whole idea is to see that it doesn't. Forever. WIPP is located in Permian salts that are over 500 million years old, and if left alone, the waste will stay put.
